Project Kitape Katha Koi

“Project Kitape Katha Koi Community Library”

Assam has a history of rural libraries, known as Gramya Puthibhoral, playing a crucial role as agents of social change in the local community by providing access to reading for everyone in rural Assam. We believe that libraries serve as a space that can encourage us to think more, promote democratic values, foster critical thinking, and cultivate empathy within our community. Community libraries have the potential to promote a sense of love and understanding among us. Free community libraries can guarantee the right to read for all. With this belief, we are dedicated to reviving the rich history of rural libraries in Assam and are committed to the free library movement in India as part of The Free Libraries Network India & South Asia. https://www.fln.org.in/

The Project Kitape Katha Koi was established as an online storytelling platform in April 2020 during the pandemic. The original plan to start a free library was postponed due to the pandemic.

The Project Kitape Kotha Koi Community Library, our first community library, was founded in Chenijan Jorhat in August 2021. It is a safe and inclusive space that focuses on library education with the goal of making reading accessible and free. We believe that reading is a right for everyone and that everyone should have equal access to books and reading. To achieve this, we are dedicated to creating community-owned free libraries, acting as a positive influence in the local community and making reading accessible to every child.

Our first free library in Jorhat has a collection of over 2000 books and serves around 100 children from 5 nearby villages and 1 tea estate.

Our community library is a member of The Free Libraries Network (FLN) India & South Asia as a core group and is committed to advancing the free library movement.

Everyone realizes why a new common language would be desirable: one could refuse to pay expensive translators. To achieve this, it would be necessary to have uniform grammar, pronunciation and more common words.

Chandraprabha Saikiani Feminist Library & Resource Centre

A Feminist Library and Resource Centre in Dibrugarh was inaugurated in March 2023. Our Library serves as an anti-discriminatory safe space for all readers. The library has a collection of 2000+ books and caters to nearby local communities. It also actively engages with the LGBTQIA++ community by organizing various activities and workshops. These include events for children, adolescents, and adults such as dance, drama, music, games, storytelling, read-aloud sessions, and weekly book readings. The library also functions as a safe space for the LGBTQIA++ community and aims to enhance the community’s political awareness.

Still in today’s date, many transgender individuals often face challenges when using public restrooms. They might feel unsafe or become the targets of discrimination. This discomfort can lead to a higher dropout rate within the transgender community. The traditional division of restrooms into male and female categories can result in discrimination against transgender individuals who use restrooms that don’t match the gender they were assigned at birth. This sometimes leads to situations where individuals avoid using the restroom altogether to avoid mistreatment.

Although there has been some progress with the introduction of gender-neutral restrooms, such as the initiative at Tezpur Central University in the Department of Social Work, there is still a need for more gender-neutral facilities in educational institutions to address these issues. This change wouldn’t require a major infrastructure overhaul but would necessitate a shift in mindset. It’s crucial to educate staff, faculty, and students about gender and sexuality. When people understand the complexities of gender identity, they will be better equipped to empathize with the challenges faced by transgender individuals when using public facilities.
